Overview

CBG is often called the "stem cell of cannabinoids" — and for good reason. Every other major cannabinoid starts as CBGA (CBG's acid form) before enzymes convert it into THC, CBD, or CBC. By the time most cannabis is harvested, most CBGA has already been converted, leaving CBG at low levels in finished flower. Special high-CBG hemp cultivars are bred to capture it before that happens. CBG is non-intoxicating and has become a significant category in hemp wellness products, often positioned as a clear-headed alternative to CBD.

The Chemistry

CBG (C₂₁H₃₂O₂) is structurally similar to THC and CBD but lacks the cyclized ring portion of the molecule, giving it a distinct shape and pharmacological profile. It's more thermally stable than THC, which makes it easier to formulate. It has historically been more expensive to produce than CBD because of its low natural abundance — but purpose-bred high-CBG cultivars have made it much more accessible.

Where It Comes From

CBG is the decarboxylated form of CBGA. In growing plants, most CBGA is directed by enzymes toward THCA, CBDA, or CBCA. Growers who want high CBG yields either develop cultivars that overproduce CBGA or harvest early — before conversion enzymes have had time to process it all. This is why high-CBG strains are relatively newer to the market.

How It Works in Your Body

CBG's effects come from a range of different targets. While it weakly activates the same CB1 and CB2 receptors as THC, its notable activity is elsewhere: it strongly activates alpha-2 adrenergic receptors (involved in blood pressure and pain), influences serotonin signaling, and activates TRPV1 (a pain and inflammation pathway). This multi-target activity may explain why CBG feels distinct from both CBD and THC.

What to Expect

CBG doesn't cause a high. Users often describe the experience as clear-headed — different from the sometimes-sedating quality of CBD at higher doses. Common reports include:
