Overview

CBN forms when THC degrades — it's what happens to THC when cannabis ages, sits in heat, or is exposed to oxygen and light. Older flower and concentrates contain more CBN relative to THC. In the market, CBN has been heavily positioned as a sleep cannabinoid, and it's in nearly every dedicated sleep product on the shelf. The science behind that sleep claim, though, is more complicated than the marketing lets on — and worth understanding before you buy.

The Chemistry

CBN (C₂₁H₂₆O₂) has a similar structure to THC but with an aromatic ring where THC has a partially saturated ring. This makes CBN chemically stable — it's essentially where THC ends up after complete oxidation. High CBN levels on a certificate of analysis are a red flag for product age or poor storage. Fresh, properly stored cannabis should have very low CBN.

Where It Comes From

CBN isn't produced fresh by the cannabis plant in meaningful amounts. It forms over time as THC breaks down — heat, light, oxygen exposure, and age all accelerate the process. This is why storing cannabis in cool, dark, airtight containers keeps CBN levels low and preserves potency. Manufacturers producing CBN isolate typically synthesize it from CBD or THC rather than extracting it from aged plant material.

How It Works in Your Body

CBN is a weak activator of the same CB1 and CB2 receptors as THC, but with much lower potency. At the concentrations found in commercial products, it's unlikely to produce noticeable psychoactive effects on its own. It also interacts with TRPA1 and TRPV2 — channels involved in pain sensation — and with PPARγ receptors linked to inflammation. The sedating reputation of aged cannabis may have more to do with degraded terpenes than with CBN itself.

What to Expect

At the doses in most commercial products, CBN produces mild effects at best. Some people report:

  • Subtle relaxation or drowsiness (especially in combination with THC or melatonin)
  • Mild pain relief
  • Gentle appetite stimulation

The honest picture on sleep: A 2021 review found no peer-reviewed evidence that CBN independently helps humans sleep. The "CBN = sleep" story is largely built on the fact that aged cannabis tends to be sedating — which is likely due to the full spectrum of changes from degradation, not CBN alone. If CBN sleep products work for you, that's real — but the active mechanism is probably other ingredients in the formula, like THC, melatonin, or terpenes.
