Overview
THCA is THC before it's activated. Fresh cannabis flower is mostly THCA — not THC. Heat triggers a chemical conversion called decarboxylation that turns non-intoxicating THCA into psychoactive THC. This is why eating raw cannabis doesn't get you high, but smoking, vaping, or baking with it does. THCA has also become a major player in a legal gray zone: high-THCA hemp flower reads as legal hemp under the federal definition, but it becomes THC when consumed.
The Chemistry
THCA is heavier than THC by one carboxylic acid group (–COOH). When heat is applied, that group breaks off as CO₂ — the decarboxylation reaction. The conversion factor of 0.877 accounts for this mass loss when calculating how much THC a given amount of THCA will yield. This factor is baked into the Total THC formula used on every legal cannabis label.
Where It Comes From
THCA is produced directly in the cannabis plant by the enzyme THCA synthase, starting from CBGA. In high-THC cultivars, THCA synthase dominates, directing most cannabinoid production toward THCA. In hemp cultivars, a different enzyme dominates, directing production toward CBDA instead. This enzyme ratio is genetically determined and is the core molecular difference between marijuana and hemp.
How It Works in Your Body
In its raw form, THCA doesn't activate CB1 receptors — the carboxylic acid group changes its shape enough that it doesn't fit the same way THC does. This is why it's non-intoxicating when consumed cold. Researchers have identified independent activity though: THCA inhibits COX enzymes (similar to how ibuprofen works), activates PPARγ receptors (anti-inflammatory and metabolic effects), and shows anti-nausea effects in animal models. These effects only matter if you're consuming THCA without heat.
What to Expect
If you're smoking, vaping, or cooking with cannabis, THCA converts to THC and you'll experience THC's effects. The THCA percentage is as important as the THC percentage in predicting potency.
If consuming raw and unheated (fresh juice, raw tinctures):
- No intoxication
- Possible anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea effects (preclinical evidence)
- Subtle, slower-onset effects
THCA flower purchased in hemp markets will produce THC effects when smoked — regardless of how it's labeled.
