Overview
THCV is structurally similar to THC — one short side chain difference — but at typical doses it behaves nearly opposite: where THC stimulates appetite, THCV suppresses it; where THC activates CB1 receptors, THCV blocks them. The nickname "diet weed" oversimplifies things, but the core observation isn't wrong. THCV is rare in most cannabis strains, occurring in higher concentrations in certain African-origin cultivars and in strains now bred specifically for it.
The Chemistry
THCV (C₁₉H₂₆O₂, 286.41 g/mol) has a three-carbon (propyl) side chain where THC has five carbons (pentyl). That two-carbon difference changes how the molecule fits CB1 receptors — instead of activating them like THC does, THCV blocks them at low to moderate doses. At very high doses, the behavior flips to partial activation. This dose-dependent switch is pharmacologically unusual and makes THCV one of the more interesting cannabinoids for researchers.
Where It Comes From
THCV follows a parallel biosynthetic pathway to THC but starts from divarinolic acid (propyl chain) instead of olivetolic acid (pentyl chain). The result is CBGVA → THCVA, which decarboxylates to THCV. High-THCV phenotypes have been found in cannabis populations from East Africa and selectively bred into commercial cultivars.
How It Works in Your Body
At low to moderate doses, THCV blocks CB1 receptors — opposing the signaling that normally increases appetite, reduces anxiety around eating, and contributes to weight gain with regular cannabis use. It also activates CB2 receptors (anti-inflammatory potential), GPR55 receptors (pain and bone metabolism), and TRPV1 (pain sensing). The CB1 blockade at typical doses is the mechanism behind appetite suppression and why THCV may counteract some THC effects.

Preclinical evidence supports appetite suppression, anticonvulsant activity, metabolic improvement in obese animal models, and neuroprotection in Parkinson's disease models. Schedule I status limits commercial research in the U.S., but the pharmaceutical interest is real.
